Golf - Critchley Cup Part2… The OSB Golfing Society are arranging another OSBGS golf day (Critchley Cup part2) to be held at Silloth Golf Club on the afternoon of the 4th October 2025. The OSBGS hope you will be able to join them on the day to play the wonderful Silloth Links, or to come and spectate, or even join up for a social meal afterwards (open to all OSBs - golfers and non-golfers).

London OSB Social (Informal Gathering) – Just a reminder that the OSBs' informal social get-together at The Samuel Pepys pub/restaurant (Stew Lane, EC4V 3PT) is on Friday 10th October 2025 from 6pm onwards.
Martin Birkett (SH 83-90) is kindly hosting the drinks as Nicola is unable to do so this year. If you fancy a lite bite and/or drink or even just catching up, please do call in and join him. Cumbria Dinner - St Beghian Society Social Gathering Feb 2026 - The Cumbria Dinner and Gathering will take place on Friday 27th February 2026, 7.00 for 7.30 pm at Armathwaite Hall, Bassenthwaite Lake, Keswick. Please see here for further details.

OSB turns 100! Congratulations to Michael Jackson (F 39-43) who celebrated his 100th Birthday last week. We wish him a very happy and special birthday from all of us at the St Beghian Society. Photos may be seen here.

Golf - Critchley Cup Part2… The OSB Golfing Society are arranging another OSBGS golf day (Critchley Cup part2) to be held at Silloth Golf Club on the afternoon of the 4th October 2025. Fortunately, they have a number of Silloth members and therefore expect the cost of golf to be circa £50 each. Similarly, as for the day at Penrith, they will arrange for a light lunch before golf. They have also booked a large table at the Bank Restaurant in Silloth for evening dinner for those interested locals and for those staying overnight. The OSBGS hope you will be able to join them on the day to play the wonderful Silloth Links, or to come and spectate, or even join up for a social meal afterwards (open to all OSBs - golfers and non-golfers). Golf - Cyril Gray Tournament - The OSB Golfing Society will be at the Cyril Gray tournament in Surrey this week. This event is for Halford Hewitt ‘veterans’ ie over 50s and is played at Worplesdon GC on Tuesday to Friday (24th-27th June). Thirty two of the Halford Hewitt schools attend.

St Beghians’ Day Reunion and ‘Live Music in the Quad’ - Saturday 14th June 2025.
Thank you to all those OSBs who braved the weather and came along on Saturday to St Beghians' Day 2025. We hope you enjoyed the day, despite the rain! Here are a few shots from Saturday... a full summary and further photos will be included in the July Bulletin. (Apologies, we are aware that some shots are upside down/back to front - we're working on it! Technology urghh...!).

Hugh Turpin (M 83-13) -It is with sadness we report the death of Hugh Turpin who was Head of Music at the school from 1983 until 2013. Many OSBs will remember Hugh for his tremendous musical talent. Hugh died this morning, the 28th May 2025.
Hugh's Funeral is to be held on Thursday 12th June in St Bees Priory at 12:30pm. A choir is being formed to sing at the funeral - if you are interested in singing please contact Frank Bowler at the Priory. A choir rehearsal is now confirmed for 7:30pm on Wednesday, 11th June and there will be another warm up and run-through at 11:15am on the day of the funeral. If anyone wants to sing they must attend these.

Rev Jackson Portrait - The portrait which can be seen here used to hang in the school library. In 2016 it was briefly on display in the Priory. If anyone can inform us of its present whereabouts we would be very grateful.

St Beghians’ Day Reunion and ‘Live Music in the Quad’ - Saturday 14th June 2025.
An afternoon of ‘Live Music in the Quad’, with various artists performing a mix of music across the genres, followed by a barbeque in the Quad to conclude the day. The day will also include the AGM, a talk by the HeadmasterChapel Service and a lunch in the Foundation Dining Room, plus a Fives competition.
All are welcome, including partners, family and friends – Please book your place now. We hope to see you there!

New OSB Newsletter - If we have your email address, you will have recently received the first issue of a newly proposed OSB Newsletter. We are trialling this idea and are initially proposing to produce two short, online only, Newsletters a year, in Spring and Autumn, to be distributed in between the current January and July issues of  ‘The Old St Beghian’ Bulletin. These Newsletters are not intended to replace the current Bulletin, but instead, to provide accessible regular current news in a bitesize interactive format. We would welcome your comments and ideas in relation to this new initiative. We hope you enjoy reading it. Please do let us have your email address if you would like to receive a copy in future. London Branch Dinner 2025 - A reminder that the 2025 OSB London Branch Dinner is on Friday 30th May 2025 at the
Civil Service Club in London
(13-15 Great Scotland Yard, SW1A 2HJ). The evening will start with drinks at the Club from 18:30 BST, after which we will sit for a 3-course dinner at 19:30 in the Queen Elizabeth Dining Room. The cost is £55 per head, which includes wine and menu options. Cambridge OSBs at Band Night... John Braithwaite, organiser of the Cambridge OSB Group, and Ken Ho went along to the Elm Tree pub in Cambridge on Sunday night to see an old boy play the mouth organ and sing in the Blackjack Blues Band. Cumbria Dinner (Feb 2025) - Photographs - What an excellent night the Cumbria Dinner was at Armathwaite Hall on Friday! Thank you to all who came along and huge thanks to Darryl Davies for organising it. There were nearly 100 people there to enjoy the evening. School Christmas Carol Service  - All OSBs are warmly invited to the School Christmas Carol Service on Friday 13th December in
St Bees Priory, commencing at 11.30am. Mince pies, mulled wine and a warming glass of sherry will be served in the school library immediately afterwards.

BBC's 'Villages by the Sea' - St Bees - St Bees School will feature on the BBC series 'Villages by the Sea' airing on BBC TWO on Monday 16th December at 7pm. We are all looking forward to seeing the programme.

St Beghian Society Social Gathering 2025 - West Cumbria Dinner- The Cumbria Dinner and Gathering will take place on Friday 28th February 2025, 7.00 for 7.30 pm at Armathwaite Hall, near Keswick. 1969/70 2nd XV Rugby Team - Malcolm Robinson (SH 65-70) has sent in a photo of the 2nd XV rugby team from 1969/70 (click here to view). Both Malcolm and Brian Fisher (FS 65-70) are hoping to attend the 2025 St Beghians Day Reunion and Live Music in the Quad event on the 14th June 2025 and they are wondering if it would be possible to get as many of the 69/70 team pictured to attend. How about it? Are you in the photograph, or were at school at the same time and are you interested in a reunion next year?

Book returned to St Bees School after more than 100 years - A Poetry of Byron book, inscribed with the name of former pupil Leonard Ewbank, who was at school between 1902-1911, has been returned to the school library.
